Computers
Updated: August 2012
At age 4, I started out on one of those Apple IIe computers (You know, the ones we now call "fancy typewriters"). I use computers for everything that doesn't require a pen and paper, including music (written and audio), media production, finances, and of course website development.

Currently, I own two machines. The first is an 8-core Mac Pro 2.8GHz tower (purchased January 2008) which serves as my primary workstation for all home development and production. The laptop model is a MacBook Pro 2.9GHz (purchased July 2012) which is used while out in the field and can also login to the home workstation if needed.

Due to the evolving nature of web development, the Mac Pro contains a vast number of different operating systems, thanks to the power of virtualization (and gobs of RAM). Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard continues to be the dominant and stable OS. Using VMWare Fusion, all flavors of Microsoft Windows (3.1, 98, 2000, XP, Vista and 7) are installed (yes, all legit). Because of legacy Mac roots, I also used Sheepshaver emulation to add the classic Mac OS 7.6, 8.6, and 9.0.4, just because I can. On the Linux front, I'm still using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04, although it may be time to upgrade to the new version that has superseded it.

The laptop will be cutting edge and a playground for new technology. It has the latest version of Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, as well as Windows 8 via Boot Camp. Thanks to iCloud synchronization, nothing vital will be stored on this machine. Therefore I can load up and experiment with new software and then just wipe it clean if it starts to bog down.

I have a strict schedule of staggering upgrades every leap year. Provided traditional computers still exist by then, the desktop/tower will be replaced in 2016, and the laptop will be replaced in 2020. However, mid-cycle upgrades are performed to the current machines to slow their obsolescence.
